Kashmir's weaving tradition centres on the gossamer-fine wool of the Changthangi goat — the source of all true pashmina. Hand-spun on a takli spindle and woven on pit looms in the Old City of Srinagar, a single pashmina shawl can take six months to complete. The state also produces Kani shawls, where motifs are built up using small wooden bobbins of pre-dyed yarn.
